There are hundreds like him in Bangalore.
Rameshwar has not got a job, but he has not given up hope as an NGO is helping him and other senior citizens registered with it in their hunt for jobs.

The fear of large numbers of good quality British jobs being outsourced to rapidly developing countries such as India may be overstated, says a new report published by The Work Foundation.Despite the rhetoric of an abundance of Indian knowledge workers hungry for British jobs, there is little direct evidence so far of significant job migration, the report finds, setting at rest fears that India is taking away a large number of British jobs.The report also says that British trade in information and communications services with developed countries such as Germany dwarfs that with India. The Work Foundation is an independent research organisation and consultancy.The report finds that according to independent analysis just 5.5 percent of all jobs lost across Europe were due to offshoring activities in the first quarter of 2007. In 2005 the figure was 3.4 percent. Meanwhile jobs in sectors theoretically vulnerable to outsourcing such as call centres have gone up rather than down in Britain.The report says travel (£626 million) and transportation (£289 million) are the largest services imported from India while computer and information services (£122 million) are only the third largest import.

There are now 250 million telephone subscribers in India, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said here Monday. This number has been achieved ahead of the scheduled target date of end December.The tele-density in the country has risen to 21.85 percent in September compared with 21.20 percent in August.'Keeping growth projections on the conservative side, the subscriber number has already crossed 250 million, the target for December 2007. Thus, expectations of 500 million subscribers by 2010 is by no means ambitious,' said the TRAI in a statement.The number of wireless telephone subscribers reached 209.08 million at the end of last month.However, growth in the number of wireless subscribers fell, with 7.80 million new additions in September compared with 8.31 million in August.
In the landline segment, 39.58 million subscribers were added last month against 39.73 million additions in the month preceding it.
During the first six months (April-Sep) of 2007, 42.80 million telephone subscribers have been added as compared with 29.70 million during the corresponding period previous year, said the TRAI.
The growth in the number of broadband users remained steady with 2.56 million additions in Aug and 2.67 million in Sep.

The rising accolades for India on the world corporate arena is not benefiting the companies alone, the would-be managers in the country are also getting a pie with job offers running into crores. Still to complete their study, five students at Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow have got pre-placement job offers with an average salary of Rs one crore, all coming from global investment banks.

"The numbers of offers have already surpassed the last year's figures when only four students had bagged PPOs till the time of final placements," IIM-L's Student Recruitment Coordinator Mahesh Nair told media. All the five offers are from international investment banks, Nair said, but did not divulge the employers' names. The process is still on and the institute expects more offers to come in the immediate future. The other IIMs in the country are also seeing a rush of international corporates with an increasing number of pre- placement offers (PPOs) for their students. PPOs are final placement offers made to the students based on their performance during the summer internship at a company after the first year of MBA. "This year, we have seen a significant rise in the number of PPOs made to our students and this remarkable feature is unparalleled across all IIMs," the placement cell of IIM Banagalore said in a statement. Job offers have been pouring for IIM-B students this year, with a record 70 pre-placement offers having been made for a batch of 250 students. As part of the British insurance company’s plan to cut about $500 million in costs, 40%-50% of its IT Jobs will be offshore by yearendHalf of UK insurance company Norwich Union’s IT will be done in India by the end of this year, as part of companywide plans to slash £250m off the group’s £2bn operating costs.In an exclusive interview with silicon.com, Norwich Union CIO Alex Robinson said offshoring work to India is crucial both in terms of cutting costs and providing more flexibility of access to IT resources and skills.
He said between 40 per cent and 50 per cent of Norwich Union’s IT will be offshore by the end of this year, with specific areas such as application development closer to 70 per cent.
Norwich Union has been using India for IT and business process work since 1998 and outsources most of the work to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Wipro, although the parent Aviva group has its own IT centre in India as well.
Robinson said cost and flexibility are the key competitive advantages Norwich Union gets from offshoring IT work to India.He said: “There is a labour cost differential, the Indian work is cheaper.

The other advantage, and the one that persists almost irrespective of where labour costs go, is the flexibility we get from tapping into the offshore workforce and the offshore suppliers. We can ramp up or ramp down the work that’s going on with those companies in a reasonably quick and easy way.”

About half of the jobs being outsourced by Silicon Valley companies are coming to India, according to a survey released in Silicon Valley. More than 53% of Silicon Valley companies surveyed this month reported that they outsource a portion, or all, of their operations, according to the survey by Santa Clara University. And India is benefiting the most with roughly half of the jobs winding up there, CNET News.com reported. “India has an educated workforce, and its people speak English, so it makes it an attractive place for outsourcing,” said Mario Belotti, an economics professor at the University. Other Asian nations were reported to be trailing in the jobs race, with China accounting for 8% of the outsourced jobs. The survey has tracked outsourcing by regional companies over the last three years, and registered a slight decline in the number of companies taking jobs out of Silicon Valley last month. While outsourcing remains a large component of how businesses operate in Silicon Valley, manufacturing has seen a notable decline, Belotti said. The percentage of firms reporting “no outsourcing done in the last quarter” has increased in the manufacturing, from 51.1% in ‘03 to 60.7% in this year’s survey. “Much of this drop was in the semiconductor and electronics area,” Belotti said. In August, the region posted a 7% year-over-year increase in computing and electronics manufacturing jobs. —

Delhi-Mumbai industrial Project to provide employment to three million people

The ambitious Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor expected to be launched in January next year to provide world class infrastructure is in the advanced stage of finalisation. This was indicated by the Commerce and Industry Minister Mr. Kamal Nath at the Indo-Japan CEO's meeting in New Delhi today which was attended by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, Mr. Akira Amari and a large number of Japanese business delegations. He said the government is taking a number of steps with regard to the project on priority basis. He said the landmark project will provide employment to three million people by creating 60 per cent of the new jobs in the area of manufacturing and the rest in post-harvest activities like food processing. The Japanese Minister said that the his country is interested not only in infrastructure development of the project but also in environment conservation and human resource development. He said a mechanism needs to be devised to match Indian and Japanese business enterprises. Later at a press conference, Mr. Kamal Nath while replying to a question said that he expects at least 10 billion dollars worth of Japanese investment in five years in the manufacturing area of the project. Five investments and an equal number of industrial regions are expected to be set up in the first phase of the 90 billion dollar project which is expected to be completed by 2012 along with the Dedicated Rail Freight Corridor.(AIR)

Two crore got jobs under NREG programme

The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has called for independent professional evaluation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme and its impact on employment generation, rural wages, gender disparity, agricultural productivity and rural infrastructure development. Dr.Singh urged the State Governments that were lagging behind in the implementation of the programme to learn from the experience of the States that were actively implementing the programme. An official communiqué released in the capital today says, the Minister for Rural Development Mr Raghuvansh Prasad apprised the Prime Minister of the successful implementation of the programme in 330 districts. It was reported that so far over two crore persons had been provided employment under the programme. This includes more than a crore Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and 80 lakh women.
Dr. Singh reviewed the progress of the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme at a special review meeting yesterday. The review noted that as a result of introduction of NREGA there is decline in distress migration and improvement in land productivity as well as increased awareness among rural poor regarding minimum wages. There has also been an increase in wage earnings and improvement in participation of women in the rural work force.
The Prime Minister has called for the preparation of district-wise District Employment Report, giving information on NREGA, to be presented on Labour Day, on the 1st of May, next year. (AIR)

AOL adds 400 jobs in India

America Online said Tuesday that it would add 400 jobs at its Indian subsidiary, bringing the total number to 1,900. America Online Member Services India, the Internet giant's call center operation in Bangalore, is one of eight support centers AOL operates globally. The company said the Indian center has handled 10 million customer calls since July 2002.
AOL plans to broaden the scope of work done in Bangalore to include other product- and technology-related projects. The company, however, declined to give details. "Our plans are driven by member needs, and we see India as a great place to fulfill this need," Neil Smit, executive vice president of member development, said in a statement. (CNET NEWS)

Satellite Based Distance Learning in the Vocational System has been launched by the Directorate General of Employment and Training (DGET) in the Ministry of Labour and Employment on a pilot basis. The DGET-EDUSAT Pilot Programme was launched recently from the Vishveswaraiah Technological University (VTU) Studio in Bangalore. It is transmitted to 12 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) being covered under the Centres of Excellence(COE) scheme of DGET in Karnataka. The Pilot Programme is also being received in a number of other locations in the southern states. During the Pilot Programme the lectures are being telecast from the VTU Studio for 2 hours every day during June, 2007 in subjects like life skills and engineering drawing. The Government of India is the nodal agency for monitoring, supervision and coordination of vocational training in the country.
