Latest news from the offshore outsourcing world indicates that India is fast emerging as a new age design hub for global consumer electronics manufacturers and FMCG giants.Offshoring to India --- which started off with call centres and back-office jobs like accounting --- has spread to include high-end product design work and even packaging and graphic designs. As manufacturers look at reducing costs and product development cycles, outsourcing their deign jobs to India seems the perfect answer. The result: MNCs like Whirlpool GE, LG, Philips and Bosch are setting up research and design centres in India. And some others like Reckitt Benckiser are offshoring design work to Indian design houses.

Those in the business, like Anuj Prasad, chief designer at Delhi-based Desmania Design are of the opinion that outsourcing of design jobs are going to hit Indian shores in a big way. Prasad says, "Outsourcing design jobs to India started in a small way, but is going to be big. This is the latest trend in the world of manufacturing. A product is today conceived in the US, designed in India, manufactured in China and sold in markets across the globe".

TCS Synergy Park in Hyderabad

11 Feb 2008 , Hyderabad : Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a leading IT services, business solutions and outsourcing organization, announced the launch of its second Global Delivery Centre (GDC) in the city. "I am getting desperate — I took a loan to fly and interest alone is Rs 15,000 monthly."Anand did his CPL from San Diego and was in the same boat. The country's leading job site, Naukri.com, has introduced an 'International Jobs' section that boasts over 9,000 overseas jobs in over 15 countries; meant for both freshers and professionals with up to 25 years work-experience. A majority of these jobs are based out of the US, UK, Dubai, and Singapore. They pan across different industries and functions, including Software Services, Construction, Engineering, Metals, Oil & Gas, Infrastructure, Healthcare, Banking, Financial Services, and Aviation, among others.

All that users need to do is click on the 'International Jobs' section, search for job options, browse through the listings, and apply wherever desired. Search can be filtered as per industry, role or job profile, and freshness among other criteria. Besides, there's a selection of companies offering international jobs. Hitesh Oberoi, chief operating officer of Info Edge (India), said that with globalization of services, there's growing requirement for white collar talent across countries. The Work Foundation is an independent research organisation and consultancy. The report finds that according to independent analysis just 5.5 percent of all jobs lost across Europe were due to offshoring activities in the first quarter of 2007. In 2005 the figure was 3.4 percent. Meanwhile jobs in sectors theoretically vulnerable to outsourcing such as call centres have gone up rather than down in Britain. The report says travel (£626 million) and transportation (£289 million) are the largest services imported from India while computer and information services (£122 million) are only the third largest import.

India help Tibetan refugees

Tibetan refugees living in the hills of this picturesque region in central India since 1963 have urged New Delhi to amend rules to allow their younger generation to join public and private sector jobs.“Thousands of Tibetan refugees who settled in India after China’s invasion of Tibet are struggling to improve their quality of life and get over extreme backwardness despite good support from the Indian government,” Lobsang Chojor, in charge of Tibetan refugee settlement at Mainpat, told IANS.“Now India should look after the job prospects of the younger generation of refugee families who were born in India and comprise about 85 percent of the total refugee population,” Lobsang said, as another World Refugee Day passed by Wednesday.
Around 1,800 Tibetans live in seven refugee camps spread out over Mainpat, about 400 km north of capital Raipur. Starved of government funding, Australian education institutes are desperately recruiting full fee paying overseas students. Many universities have permanent representatives stationed in India and other Asian countries. Their efforts have been rewarded and a new influx of Indian students is entering Australia. It is estimated that Canberra University which is one of about two dozen universities is recruiting about 500 students every year for last four years. Many regional universities like University of Ballarratt have opened campus in Sydney to cater to these foreign students. Manyt of these students have paid large sums of fees and are looking for work to support themselves. This has started the transformation the working class. In 1986 a flux of non-skilled Indian immigrants meant that you could see white Australians being replaced by Indians in cleaning jobs. In 1998 we have started seeing the replacement of counter staff and chefs at McDonalds and other places by young, bright and attentive Indian students. I guess the plight of Indina stduents in Australia is that of Indian stduent migration to USA during the 1970's. We will see many of these young boys becoming future millionaires in Australia in the year 2010 and beyond.(Indians in Australia)

Jobs in Developing nations

The fastest job market on the planet, the developing nations have millions of unfilled positions waiting for the Westerner and her expertise. Your dream job just went to a developing nation, is it feasible to join it? Two countries come to mind when we say the developing nations: India, the world's largest democracy and China, the world's fastest growing economy. A developing nation does not necessarily mean, low paid jobs for the society.

The supply-demand curve maintains that India and China supply labor to create the products demanded by the developed nations. Outsourcing has gone to these nations for the reduced cost of production but it has also created new problems - qualified personnel to carry out and teach the tasks required. It has created an internal labor force that has new monetary wealth: a force that desires new ways of spending this wealth. But are the raids and sending back of the kids enough action against the mammoth crime? Probably, not. What needs to be done is tackling the problem the other way. Why not penalize child employers heavily? Why not give such exemplary punishment to them that it acts as a deterrent? The process of alignment will be complete only when it is linked to the same measures at the beginning of the process and at the end of the process: goal setting at the start of the process and performance normalization in keeping with organizational performance for the period. It is becoming increasingly difficult for companies to hire and retain the talent pool. Today, recruitment is $1.25 billion industry, with a growth rate of more than 250 per cent. But experts opine that to maintain the momentum, continuous restructuring and innovation is essential. In India, recruitment means talent acquisition. Sourcing the right talent pool, in a cost effective way at the correct time is a major challenge for recruiters. Thus, companies need to re-strategise their hiring methods to succeed. Facilities like gymnasium, eating outlets and office transport are a must today. Companies that would be able to offer the best to their employees would be able to succeed in the long run.

250 millon telephone subscribers in india

There are now 250 million telephone subscribers in India, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said here Monday. This number has been achieved ahead of the scheduled target date of end December. The tele-density in the country has risen to 21.85 percent in September compared with 21.20 percent in August.'Keeping growth projections on the conservative side, the subscriber number has already crossed 250 million, the target for December 2007. Thus, expectations of 500 million subscribers by 2010 is by no means ambitious,' said the TRAI in a statement. The number of wireless telephone subscribers reached 209.08 million at the end of last month. However, growth in the number of wireless subscribers fell, with 7.80 million new additions in September compared with 8.31 million in August.
In the landline segment, 39.58 million subscribers were added last month against 39.73 million additions in the month preceding it.
During the first six months (April-Sep) of 2007, 42.80 million telephone subscribers have been added as compared with 29.70 million during the corresponding period previous year, said the TRAI.
The growth in the number of broadband users remained steady with 2.56 million additions in Aug and 2.67 million in Sep.

Unix System Administration

Primary Job Responsibilities Participate as a member of a top Unix Systems Administration team responsible for operationally excellent management and operation of the PayPal servers required to keep PayPal's development environment running in a 24x7 environment. Still to complete their study, five students at Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow have got pre-placement job offers with an average salary of Rs one crore, all coming from global investment banks.

"The numbers of offers have already surpassed the last year's figures when only four students had bagged PPOs till the time of final placements," IIM-L's Student Recruitment Coordinator Mahesh Nair told media. All the five offers are from international investment banks, Nair said, but did not divulge the employers' names. The process is still on and the institute expects more offers to come in the immediate future. The other IIMs in the country are also seeing a rush of international corporates with an increasing number of pre- placement offers (PPOs) for their students. PPOs are final placement offers made to the students based on their performance during the summer internship at a company after the first year of MBA. "This year, we have seen a significant rise in the number of PPOs made to our students and this remarkable feature is unparalleled across all IIMs," the placement cell of IIM Banagalore said in a statement. Job offers have been pouring for IIM-B students this year, with a record 70 pre-placement offers having been made for a batch of 250 students. At IIM-B, many companies are still in the process of completing the evaluation of candidates and more PPOs could be on way

Crisis in Ratil jobs in U.P.

The protest from small traders in Uttar Pradesh has forced the retail giant Reliance to shut shop in the state. Consequently, the company is laying off around 1000 employees in India's most populous state. The protests cropped up amid the fear that millions of small shopkeepers and traders could lose their jobs if Reliance is allowed to play in the local markets. The company was constantly facing opposition to its attempts to reopen Western-style supermarkets. Finally, the state government decided to shut 10 Reliance Fresh supermarkets in August. The move highlights how efforts to modernise India's economy face political obstacles. According to company sources, there were plans to invest more than $5.5 bn in this venture, which included hypermarkets, supermarkets, discount and department stores. However, right now, everything is on a hold.

india is outsourching jobs

Many of them are recent American college graduates, and some have even turned down job offers from coveted employers like Google. Instead, they accepted a novel assignment from Infosys, the Indian technology giant: fly here for six months of training, then return home to work in the company's American back offices.India is outsourcing outsourcing. One of the constants of the global economy has been companies moving their tasks--and jobs--to India. But rising wages and a stronger currency here, demands for workers who speak launge other than english , and competition from countries looking to emulate India's success as a back office-- including china, Morocco and Mexico--are challenging that model. Many executives here acknowledge that outsourcing, having rained most heavily on India, will increasingly sprinkle tasks around the globe. Or, as Ashok Vemuri, an Infosys senior vice president, put it, the future of outsourcing is "to take the work from any part of the world and do it in any part of the world."
To fight on the shifting terrain, and to beat back emerging rivals, Indian companies are hiring workers and opening offices in developing countries themselves, before their clients do.
In May, Tata Consultancy Service, Infosys's Indian rival, announced a new back office in Guadalajara, Mexico; Tata already has 5,000 workers in Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. Cognizant Technology Solutions, with most of its operations in India, has now opened back offices in Phoenix and Shanghai.Wipro, another Indian technology services company, has outsourcing offices in Canada, China, Portugal, Romania and Saudi Arabia, among other locations.
And last month, Wipro said it was opening a software development center in Atlanta that would hire 500 programmers in three years

KOTAK MAHINDRA WITH BPO JOBS

Kotak Mahindra Bank, the challenge is in keeping its front line staff ‘well informed’ about its product suite, according to Mr K.V.S. Manian, Group Head (Retail Liabilities and Branch Banking). He said the group offered an entire range of products and the basic banking service was integrated with wealth management proposal. “That is our differentiation from other banks. Our front line staff therefore would have to be fully informed of the offerings,” he said. The rising attrition level in the industry is no doubt affecting Kotak as well, especially when it comes to retaining trained hands. “This is a challenge not only for us, but the entire industry,” he said. According to him, the attrition rate in the banking industry is as high as 30 pct. “Many seem to prefer a BPO job to a bank job because the pressure is relatively less. Typical eight-hour shift, good cafeteria, pick-up and drop facility, better staff welfare package and above all, it is not marketing or achieving targets,” he reasoned. What does Kotak do to ensure staff retention? “We have created a transparent career plan within the organisation,” he said and disclosed the bank’s tie-up with Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. Relationship Managers at the bank, he continued, could opt to pursue a 18-month programme at IIM (B) at the bank’s expense, provided they have completed one year of service with the bank and would continue to do so for another two years. “The course is not cheap. More than 53% of Silicon Valley companies surveyed this month reported that they outsource a portion, or all, of their operations, according to the survey by Santa Clara University. And India is benefiting the most with roughly half of the jobs winding up there, CNET News.com reported. “India has an educated workforce, and its people speak English, so it makes it an attractive place for outsourcing,” said Mario Belotti, an economics professor at the University. Other Asian nations were reported to be trailing in the jobs race, with China accounting for 8% of the outsourced jobs. The survey has tracked outsourcing by regional companies over the last three years, and registered a slight decline in the number of companies taking jobs out of Silicon Valley last month. While outsourcing remains a large component of how businesses operate in Silicon Valley, manufacturing has seen a notable decline, Belotti said. The percentage of firms reporting “no outsourcing done in the last quarter” has increased in the manufacturing, from 51.1% in ‘03 to 60.7% in this year’s survey. “Much of this drop was in the semiconductor and electronics area,” Belotti said. In August, the region posted a 7% year-over-year increase in computing and electronics manufacturing jobs. —

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES

Prof. (Dr) P. K. DuttaProfessional Self-Employment Opportunities: Self-employed people work for themselves. They neither work as employees of any company nor do they receive regular salaries from an organization. They run their own business serving many different clients and customers. It may be a conscious decision to be self-employed or it could be forced upon you because you need to stay at home or because you are unemployed or have just been given the pink slip. But you have to look within yourself to find out in which direction your talents lie. You can take up some related courses based on your abilities, talents and interests but you have to look for work on your own. We will discuss various professional opportunities available. The focus would be on enterprises where working space is either your home or in which you move to deliver service at the client's doorstep. Various Options Career / Job at SME: There are many types of occupations available now a days and during career planning due care has to be taken for selecting the right professional. Some examples are given below: Production, Retailing, Medical Transcription, Multi-Media Application etc (Animation), Logistic, Hardware and Software support business commerce – management – Professional Training can be held as a Chartered Accountant, Financial Analysts, I.C.W.A., Marketing Export Management etc. They can work as consultant or have their own business and get employed in SMEs, Engineering & Computer Science – Various professional courses are available, degree and diploma courses, which help students to become professional and also as consultant and establish small-scale industry. Para-Medical Science – After specialization one can work as independent consultant as physiotherapist, beauty therapist etc. Other options – Fashion designer, dietician, advertising (media), employment in travel & tourism performing arts, crafts-manship etc. Own Business – Direct selling, Construction, Real Estate, Renovation, Architectural and interior designing, insurance. Many more options are there depending on the persons inclination to venture into them. In the era of globalisation, people are expected to be knowledge workers – entrepreneurs.SMEs in India are the real drivers of the economy, Sample some facts – there are over 1.18 crore units of which manufacturing/assembling/processing units comprise two-thirds of the units. The SMEs generate a turnover of Rs 4 lakh crore, 88% of the SMEs are proprietary owned, and about 8% of them being women managed. SMEs witnessed an overall growth rate of 11.5% and employ over 2.82 crore people. SMEs account for 39.42% of industrial output and 34% of the country's total exports. In the US, Europe, Japan, Korea and Taiwan, which account for nearly 75% of the World's GDP, SMEs account for nearly 50-75% of the GDP and exports in activities of the GDP and exports in activities such as manufacturing trading and services. As India's economy integrates with markets globally, exciting opportunities have opened up for SMEs, from outsourcing to increasing access to hitherto protected markets. Recognising SMEs' potential, the Government has initiated numerous programmes to nurture high growth, resilient SMEs. Simultaneously, SMEs have enhanced competitiveness, benchmarked against the best and taken full advantage of the Government's facilities and regional efforts in SAARC, ASEAN and APEC. With this quantum growth across sectors, the perspective for SMEs has shifted from domestic markets to cross-border trade and emerging markets like the South East, Middle East and China. ConclusionSuccess in business, personal relationship and social interactions requires us to reinvent ourselves to meet the ever-increasing demands of an ever-changing new era. This is accomplished not by fighting change, but by embracing it. Our reaction to change is the most important thing for business managers as well as common people. To be successful, we have to cultivate a fundamental reaction to embrace change rather than fight it. Embracing change does not mean that we compromise our values of integrity, honesty and goodwill. In fact, these values are unchangeable and are the foundation stone for a harmonious and prosperous human society. As we embrace change, we must also look forward and consider taking actions for leading the change rather than passively wait for the change come to up. Finally our motto should be – World is our Market, and my advice to all concerned is – Work and Win. (The Author is Head, Institute of International Management and Technology, W. This was indicated by the Commerce and Industry Minister Mr. Kamal Nath at the Indo-Japan CEO's meeting in New Delhi today which was attended by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, Mr. Akira Amari and a large number of Japanese business delegations. He said the government is taking a number of steps with regard to the project on priority basis. He said the landmark project will provide employment to three million people by creating 60 per cent of the new jobs in the area of manufacturing and the rest in post-harvest activities like food processing. The Japanese Minister said that the his country is interested not only in infrastructure development of the project but also in environment conservation and human resource development. He said a mechanism needs to be devised to match Indian and Japanese business enterprises. Later at a press conference, Mr. Kamal Nath while replying to a question said that he expects at least 10 billion dollars worth of Japanese investment in five years in the manufacturing area of the project. Five investments and an equal number of industrial regions are expected to be set up in the first phase of the 90 billion dollar project which is expected to be completed by 2012 along with the Dedicated Rail Freight Corridor.(AIR)

Placing the Indian competence in the world map

India’s wealth of human resources puts it in an enviable position. Most of the large newspapers and disciplines prefer to take on young graduates in any discipline, since they are eager to learn and innovative. Training on the job is of course a must. It gives them an insight on how to work with the media. Its best to keep a hardcopy of all articles published, and also maintain a CD of your work.
There are various colleges and Universities that offer courses in Mass Communication and Journalism. They are at the Under Graduate and Post Graduate level. You can also pursue a course in the same by means of Distance Education. The duration of the courses vary from one year to two years. In some Universities internship is part of curriculum.
Job Profile
As a journalist you will need to be well versed collecting and broadcasting the news via writing, speech and/or visuals. A lack in either one of them can make or break your story. Dr.Singh urged the State Governments that were lagging behind in the implementation of the programme to learn from the experience of the States that were actively implementing the programme. An official communiqué released in the capital today says, the Minister for Rural Development Mr Raghuvansh Prasad apprised the Prime Minister of the successful implementation of the programme in 330 districts. It was reported that so far over two crore persons had been provided employment under the programme. This includes more than a crore Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and 80 lakh women.
Dr. Singh reviewed the progress of the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme at a special review meeting yesterday. The review noted that as a result of introduction of NREGA there is decline in distress migration and improvement in land productivity as well as increased awareness among rural poor regarding minimum wages. There has also been an increase in wage earnings and improvement in participation of women in the rural work force.
The Prime Minister has called for the preparation of district-wise District Employment Report, giving information on NREGA, to be presented on Labour Day, on the 1st of May, next year.
